Essay Questions (Choose One):

  1. The Power of the Plan:

Byzantine architects often employed central-plan churches with domes.  Describe the key elements of a central-plan church (e.g., dome, pendentives, squinches) and explain how these elements create a unique spatial experience compared to a traditional rectangular plan.

  2. Light Fantastic:

Mosaic decoration played a crucial role in Byzantine architecture, often depicting religious figures and stories. Explain how the use of light interacts with mosaics and how this might have affected worshippers within the space.

  3. Beyond the Building:

Byzantine architecture served not just a physical purpose but also a symbolic one. Discuss how elements like materials, decoration, and scale might have been used to convey power, religious authority, or spiritual meaning.

Drawing Activity:

Now, put your newfound knowledge to the test! Research a specific Byzantine building (e.g., Hagia Sophia, Basilica of San Marco). Use your findings to make a proposal illustrating its architectural features and historical significance.

Materials:

  • A3 size Drawing paper

  • Ruler

  • Pencil

  • Colored pencils or markers (optional)

  • Reference images of Byzantine architecture (optional)

Instructions:

Choose only one from these Challenges:

  1. The Emperor's Palace:

Imagine you are the royal architect for a grand Byzantine palace. Design a floor plan showcasing a central courtyard with surrounding rooms. Include details like throne rooms, reception halls, and gardens.

  2. The Holy Sanctuary:

Design a detailed section drawing of a Byzantine church interior. Focus on the central dome area.  Depict the supporting features like pendentives or squinches, and showcase how light interacts with the space.

Whichever challenge you choose, keep these elements in mind: byzantine catholic

  • Centralized Design:

Remember, Byzantine architecture often features a central focus.  For the palace, design rooms radiating outwards from a central courtyard.  For the church, highlight the dome as the central element.

  • Byzantine Details:

Incorporate details like arches, columns, decorative mosaics (represented by geometric patterns or simple shapes), and maybe even a hint of a religious figure.

  • Light and Shadow:

Use shading or different color intensity to show how light interacts with the architectural elements.  Imagine light streaming through windows or reflecting off mosaics.

  • Scale and Proportion:

Maintain a sense of scale.  For the palace, ensure the rooms are large enough for important functions.  For the church, make the dome appear grand compared to the supporting structures.
